About 3MT

Higher Degrees by Research…Start your 3MT journey…

The Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT®)  celebrates the exciting research conducted by Doctor of Philosophy students. Developed by The University of Queensland, 3MT cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills.

The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

The Virtual 3MT of the ICOME 2025 organized by the Faculty of Management Studies at  The Open University of Sri Lanka, invites active PhD/MPhil/DBA candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) to present a captivating oral presentation on their higher degree research concisely in just 3 minutes using a single presentation slide.

The objectives of the 3MT competition are to cultivate higher research students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills.

Please visit the official 3MT® website to gain better understanding of the 3MT competition.

Eligibility for Participation

Active PhD/MPhil/DBA candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of the first presentation are eligible to participate in the competition. Please note that Graduates are not eligible.

Benefits to the Participants

        • The 3MT® competition helps research candidates develop academic, presentation, and communication skills by enabling them to explain their research clearly to a non-specialist audience. It also fosters a strong research culture and networking opportunities by bringing together candidates from Sri Lanka and abroad. Outstanding participants will be recognized with certificates and awards at the ICOME 2025 awarding ceremony. Full papers accepted for the competition will also be published in the peer-reviewed ICOME 2025 conference proceedings, and selected research papers may be considered for publication in the Sri Lanka Journal of Management Studies and Management Issues.
